Right now, our representatives in Congress are deciding whether funds from the $700 billion rescue package will be used to help the Big Three automakers. The global credit and economic crises that hit the country in September have caused a dramatic decline in auto sales and revenue and have created a crisis for this key U.S. manufacturing industry. Without immediate federal assistance, one or more major automakers could be forced to liquidate -- with devastating economic consequences for the entire country.

Many are opposed to providing bridge loans to help out our troubled auto industry, but those opposed likely don't realize the larger impact it would have on the American economy if any of the Big Three automakers goes out of business.

The financial crisis has shown how all aspects of our economy are interconnected. The collapse of one of the Big Three automakers would directly impact thousands of Teamster jobs in the manufacturing, transportation, warehousing and construction industries. We must act now!
