Fellow Colorado Corrections Officers:

I am a Correctional Officer working at Skyline Correctional Facility and Co-Chair of the Teamster's Leadership Council of Colorado Correctional Officers. We strongly believe that Colorado COs need to form our own organization to deal with the critical issues we face on the job including:

  • staffing patterns and shortages that cause dangerous conditions;
  • forced overtime;
  • double shifts;
  • weak seniority provisions; and
  • ever increasing health care costs

to name just a few.

The Teamsters will support our independent organization led and run by COs for COs. The Teamsters have the power and the resources to back us 100% as we work to make the changes needed in our work situation.

While the Governor's Executive Order on Partnership is not true collective bargaining, it is a first step that we can and should use to start to improve our jobs. Under this Executive Order, Corrections Officers could begin elections for a union representative as early as June, 2008.

The Leadership Council of Colorado Correctional Officers, with the full support of the Teamsters, needs to hear from all Colorado correctional officers about how you want to proceed to build a true CO organization. Please go to http://org.teamster.org/colocos.asp and fill out the form with your contact information. All responses will be strictly confidential. We will then contact you to get your input on making positive change for all Colorado CO's.

If we can come together in Colorado under one strong organization of Correctional Officers, I believe we can win improvements in our jobs, pay and benefits. Please take the time to contact the Leadership Council of Colorado Correctional Officers. Together, backed by the strongest union in the US—the Teamsters—we can begin to build a better future for ourselves and our families.

Sincerely,

Robert E. Lee
Co-Chair,
Teamsters Leadership Council of Colorado Correctional Officers
