United Airlines Mechanics
Overwhelmingly Vote Teamsters After two
years of intense organizing and mobilizing, United Airlines
mechanics overwhelmingly chose the Teamsters Union as their
collective bargaining representative this week. The 9,300 active
and furloughed mechanics chose Teamster Power after their former
bargaining representative, the Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal
Association, failed to hold United to its contractual obligation
to limit outsourcing.
Teamsters, Religious Leaders Unite to
Continue Martin Luther King Jr.'s Fight for Worker
Rights On the eve
of the 40th anniversary of the assassination of Martin Luther
King Jr. Teamsters and religious leaders from across the country
stood in unity with waste workers from 1968 and 2008 to demand
that Waste Management Inc. and other sanitation companies make
immediate and substantive improvements in worker
safety.
Teamsters, Mechanics Secure
$99,000 Settlement from ABX
Air When folks wonder about Teamster
power, they can look no further than a lawsuit the union filed
on behalf of 17 wrongly terminated and disciplined mechanics at
ABX Air. The company agreed to a settlement that includes
$99,000 for two mechanics, and the removal or lessening of
disciplinary charges or evaluations affecting more than 20
employees' work records.
Teamsters, School Bus and Transit
Workers United in
Jacksonville The Teamsters held
its School Bus and Transit Workers Congress in Florida last week
to discuss how to make First Student, the employer, a
wall-to-wall union company. In a spirited rally of nearly 300
people, the workers marched with signs that read "Respect,"
"Paid Vacations," and "Fairness." In the last 24 months, the
Teamsters have organized close to 6,000 school bus and transit
workers. By the end of the year that number should be tripled.
BLOGWATCH No Joke, Almost 19,000 Vote
Teamsters in the First Quarter
2008 Given the
opportunity, workers will join the union. The Teamsters have
said this time and again and whether anti-worker folks believe
it or not, the numbers don’t lie. In the first part of
2008, the union has welcomed nearly 19,000 new members to the
family. This is due to intense and focused organizing,
mobilizing and the drive for respect and a voice in the work
place.
