We Need Your Voice to Help Drown Out Lobbyists for Big Business

Greetings,

Tell Congress to Support the Employee Free Choice Act

Yesterday, Rep. George Miller (D-CA) and Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) introduced the Employee Free Choice Act, legislation that will ensure that every worker has a fair and direct path to joining a union, free from intimidation from employers.

Under the Employee Free Choice Act, workers – not management – would be given the freedom to choose how they join a union – either through majority sign-up or secret ballot. It would also enact tougher penalties for employers who violate the law.

While this is a very important first step toward leveling the playing field for America's working men and women, big business is not going to let the bill pass without a fight. Corporate interests are committing millions of dollars to lobby moderate Democrats sitting on the fence and Senator Arlen Specter, (R-PA) – the sole Republican senator that supported the bill in the last Congress.

The Employee Free Choice Act represents the first substantive changes to labor law in more than seven decades, and we must make sure it is signed into law. Big business will have their lobbyists whispering in the ear of lawmakers in the coming months so we must make sure they hear our message loud and clear – pass the Employee Free Choice Act now.

Please make sure your voice is heard by sending a letter to your senators and representatives in Congress.

Subject: Please Support the Employee Free Choice Act

Dear [decision maker name automatically inserted here],

I urge you to support the Employee Free Choice Act to protect the rights of workers across our nation to establish and participate in a union without harassment or intimidation from employers.

I know how important it is for workers to be able to form unions in order to guarantee a decent standard of living, affordable health insurance, and a safe workplace. We need to rebuild the middle class, and the Employee Free Choice Act is the best way to do that.

Don't believe the lies that Big Business is spreading with their hefty bank accounts. The Employee Free Choice Act does not take away the secret ballot. In fact, it puts the decision back in the hands of workers. Currently, the employer gets to decide.

It is shameful that employers routinely skirt the law by threatening and firing workers who want to form a union. Corporate America also employs stall tactics and delays when workers bargain for a first contract. We must have strong laws defending the basic freedom of workers to choose for themselves whether to form a union.

It's time to level the playing field against Big Business. Workers need the protections that were eroded during the previous administration. The Employee Free Choice Act restores fairness to the system. I encourage you to co-sponsor and cast your vote in favor of the Employee Free Choice Act. As your constituent, I look forward to your timely response in regard to this issue.

Sincerely,

What's At Stake:

What's at Stake

Working families across the country need help. Over the past eight years, we have seen the middle class deteriorate as corporate fat cats and their lobbyists were given free reign on George W. Bush's watch. Worker rights were thrown out the window and companies did their best to intimidate or terminate any employees who even uttered the word "union."

The current environment in which workers must try to organize is neither fair nor democratic. The Employee Free Choice Act would level the playing field and ensure that workers' freedom to choose whether to join a union is protected by doing the following:

  • Allowing workers to form a union if a majority of them sign cards.
  • Providing for first contract mediation and arbitration so that workers get their first collective bargaining agreement in a timely manner, free from stalling and delay tactics by employers.
  • Providing stiffer penalties for employers that violate workers' rights and retaliate against those who are trying to form unions.

It is time that American workers truly have a voice at work and that freedom of choice in the workplace is protected.
